Historical Background

Dedicated to the cause of creating awareness about the importance of Traditional Indian Systems of Health Care and promoting the use of medicinal plants in Primary Health Care, a group of Physicians, Scientists and others started working around Lucknow during 1988-91 under the banner of Regional Chapters of Lok Swasthya Parampara Samwardhan Samity (LSPSS), Coimbatore and Academy of Young Scientists (AYS), Chandigarh. The Group strongly believed that Policy Interventions should be based on Grass-root action and experiences.

While they studied local health traditions in Northern India, they also started publication of a bimonthly Health Magazine "Jeevaniya", both in Hindi & English, published several monographs, booklets, posters and other Health Education Material in Hindi and English. They set up Herbal Gardens, organized Health Camps and Awareness Campaigns, School Health Check-ups, Jadi Booti Yatras and several other programs for the same. They eventually formed a group in 1991 as Jeevaniya Society and got it registered as a voluntary organization in 1992.
